IN THIS CHAPTER:
CHAPTER ONE ALIGNS US ON TECHNIQUE AND LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR EFFECTIVE WORK.
Being able to play a successful audition relies on three basic points:
playing in tune
playing in time
having a good sound quality
These together create the freedom for you to play beautiful phrases and have fun portraying character.
-
This first chapter of mini-lessons help make sure we are approaching these essentials the same way. We will work on our basis for playing in tune through practicing the most common left hand finger spacings and through a couple of my favorite ways to practice scales. We will also work on shifting, to make sure we are comfortably moving between positions to these hand frames.
Because we often think of scales as “easier” or more “basic,” this unit is your best opportunity to focus on making a really beautiful sound! And practicing with a metronome on will help you get used to playing in steady time, which carries forward into the rest of your playing.
